Lord Chandos was smiling when he next saw Richard. “Such good news,” he said. “Now that Harry has been released it should not be long now, Richard, for you to be allowed to follow him.”

“Harry released!” Richard exclaimed. “When?”

“Why, yesterday,” Lord Chandos replied. “Did he not come to make his farewells?”

“No,” Richard cried. “He did not! My God, where have they taken him?”

Lord Chandos saw his alarm. “Richard, he has gone home to Meyrick. Lady Imogen has ridden with him. She took Susan Hatherton as well.”

“Susan!” Richard was devastated and was even more so when Lord Chandos smiled happily.

“She is looking forward to her marriage to Francis Rivers. An up-and-coming young man, I believe. I shall be very sorry not to have Susan's fine needlework on my clothes, but I expect she would rather be sewing shirts for her husband than for me!”

Richard reached out and poured himself a glass of wine. He could not allow Lord Chandos to see how deeply he was affected by this news of Susan's forthcoming marriage. If he had not just been told by this honest and kindly man, he would not have believed it. He forced himself to return Lord Chandos's smile.

“Harry is now at Meyrick, you say? I must write to him.”

His intention was to send a covering letter to Susan to discover for himself why she was forsaking him! He had been so sure she loved him!

Lord Chandos shook his head sadly. “I am sorry, Richard, but I must remind you that you are not allowed to receive or send letters. I can well understand why you wish to stay in communication with your son but be patient. Lady Imogen has said once he is settled in she will come back to the Tower and see you.”

He left promising to bring more books and Richard sat alone with the knowledge that all his plans for life at Meyrick with Susan had now been swept away. The thought that she would never be his was one that he could barely bring himself to contemplate. He had faced weeks of ill treatment with a stoicism that had earned him the grudging admiration of his guards. Nothing that had been done to him had left him with the feeling of such utter desolation he was now experiencing.

He was so preoccupied with his thoughts that he did not hear Lord Robert Dudley come into the room again without knocking.

“I have just heard about Susan Hatherton,” the young man cried. “What am I to do now? Where am I going to find another messenger to take my letters to the Princess Elizabeth?” He threw himself into a chair.

“You are lucky not to know real love, Richard, for it has caused me many sleepless nights and days filled with hopeless yearning. You will soon be able to replace your needlewoman!”

Richard Meyrick did not reply.
